Pyrometers are used to measure your vehicles exhaust gas temperature (EGT). Monitoring the EGT gives the driver early indication if the engine is overheating or over/under fueling. EGT gauges are often used in conjunction with performance tuning vehicles and getting the most out of the engine and turbo.
Scintex offers a variety of options for mounting the probe into your exhaust, turbo or manifold and will cover pretty much every vehicle and application. Start by checking your turbo and exhaust for an existing threaded bung, these are quite common. If you have a threaded port then we recommend using the corresponding threaded adaptor. We supply 1/8", 1/4" and M18 adapters. If you don't have a threaded port then consider a weld in adaptor as this will give a sturdy mounting point. These are supplied in steel or stainless steel for stainless exhaust systems. If welding an adaptor is not an option the clamp on probes are very simple to fit and can be done very quickly by drilling a small 3/16" hole for the probe to go through then doing the worm clamp up with a screw driver. Regarding where to fit the probe, generally speaking it doesn't matter too much as for most applications you are looking for relative changes in temperature as opposed to the absolute value. Fit the probe where an existing port is. Otherwise fit the probe after the turbo and as close as practical. This will give you faster response times to temperature changes.
The EGT kits come with a black aluminium enclosure to hold the gauge. You can mount the enclosure as required. Many customers put this on top of the console or on the steering column. For a removable option try Velcro stickers. The gauge can also be mounted directly into the dashboard without using the black enclosure. The gauge has plastic spring clips which mean you just need a rectangle cutout that is 22mm x 45mm and the gauge will clip straight in.Which length probe leads:
For standard vehicles and 4x4s you will only require the 2.5m probe. If you are fitting to an overhead console then you will need the 4m probe length. For boats and other machinery you will need to measure this and we can go up to 10 meters in length. WARNING: Do not cut the probe to length, they are calibrated based on the existing length, just role any extra up and zip tie. Also do not extend the cables on the probe as this will also change the calibration. NOTE: The probes are calibrated to be accurate at higher temperatures ie 100+ °C. At room temperature you will not get an accurate reading. These kits are designed for accurately reading gases at high temperatures with a quick response.
