Pump types can include gear, vane, centrifugal, submersible, magnetic-drive and metering designs. The correct choice depends on the fluid, required flow and pressure, solids content, installation and expected duty.
A submersible pump operates in the liquid and is commonly used for pits, sumps, drainage, septic or dirty-water duties. A surface pump remains outside the liquid and draws through a suction line, making it suitable for many transfer, pressure or process applications. Consider access, suction lift, solids handling, priming and whether automatic level control is needed.

A water pump may be damaged by oil, while a diesel transfer pump may not be designed for water or flammable petrol. Select a model whose specifications list the intended fluid, viscosity and temperature, and avoid changing liquids without confirming compatibility.
Base the selection on the flow needed at the actual operating head or discharge pressure, not just the maximum advertised flow. Vertical lift, hose length, pipe diameter, fittings, filters and fluid viscosity all reduce performance.
