A hand pump is ideal where electricity, batteries or compressed air are unavailable, or where only occasional controlled transfer is required. Common applications include dispensing compatible fuel, oil, water and chemicals from drums or tanks. Choose the pump by fluid compatibility, container connection, delivery rate, suction depth and whether rotary, lever or piston operation is preferred.
Rotary pumps provide continuous flow as the handle turns and suit many fuels and oils. Lever pumps deliver fluid in strokes and are often compact and easy to operate. Piston pumps can generate stronger suction and may handle thicker liquids depending on design. Each mechanism has different seals and compatibility limits, so select from the product specification.
It is generally better to dedicate a pump to one fluid or compatible product family. Residue can contaminate the next liquid, create chemical incompatibility or damage seals. If a pump must be changed between fluids, confirm compatibility with both products and follow an approved cleaning procedure. Never transfer drinking water through equipment previously used for fuel or chemicals.
Check for air leaks, loose drum adaptors, a damaged suction tube, worn seals, blocked inlet or excessive suction depth. Thick cold fluid also increases effort and reduces delivery. Ensure the suction tube reaches the liquid without sealing against the drum bottom, tighten connections and replace hardened or swollen seals with compatible parts.
Keep the pump clean, inspect the handle, body, seals, suction tube, hose and outlet for wear or leakage and operate it periodically if stored for long periods. Protect the outlet from dirt, close the container securely and store the pump upright where possible. Replace damaged parts promptly and follow the manufacturer’s procedure before changing fluids.
