High-Current Winch Circuit Protection

Electric winches require heavy gauge power cables connected to the vehicle battery. In the event that a positive power cable is damaged, crushed or contacts the vehicle chassis, a high-current short circuit can occur. Correctly specified circuit protection can help protect the electrical installation and reduce the risk of damage caused by a short circuit.

The Sherpa 4x4 inline fuse kit combines a 500A MEGA fuse with a heavy duty holder, providing a compact solution for adding overcurrent protection to suitable high-current 12V or 24V DC installations.

Suitable for 12V and 24V Winch Systems

The fuse and holder are rated for systems up to 24V DC and can therefore be used in suitable 12V and 24V winch installations.

Important: A 500A fuse is not appropriate for every winch or electrical installation. Fuse selection should be matched to the winch manufacturer's requirements, expected current draw, cable size and overall electrical system design.

Fuse or Battery Isolation Switch?

A fuse and a battery isolation switch perform different functions within a winch electrical system. The fuse provides automatic overcurrent protection, while an isolation switch allows the winch circuit to be manually disconnected from the battery when required.

Using an appropriately rated fuse means circuit protection remains active without the operator needing to manually disconnect the winch during normal operation. However, unlike an isolation switch, a fuse does not provide a convenient means of manually disconnecting power to the winch when the vehicle is unattended or the winch is not in use.

If a fuse operates due to an electrical fault or excessive current, the cause should be identified and corrected before the fuse is replaced.

500A MEGA Fuse Kit

The kit includes one 500A MEGA fuse and one fuse holder. The holder uses M8 studs and is supplied with nuts and washers for connection to appropriately terminated high-current cables.

Additional replacement 500A fuses are available separately through the product options.
