Description

Sherpa 4x4 Kinetic Recovery Ropes are designed for vehicle recovery from sand, mud and other situations where a controlled kinetic pull is required. Manufactured from high-stretch double-braid nylon, the ropes provide a minimum 30% stretch, allowing recovery force to build progressively as the rope extends.

Available from 13,300kg through to 91,300kg Minimum Breaking Strain (MBS), the range includes options for recreational 4WD recovery through to appropriately planned heavy vehicle and industrial recovery applications.

Sherpa 4x4 Kinetic Recovery Ropes

A kinetic recovery rope uses the elasticity of nylon to progressively store and release energy during a vehicle recovery. This provides substantially more stretch than a low-stretch tow rope and can produce a smoother application of recovery force than a rigid or low-stretch connection.

Kinetic Recovery Rope Features

  • Minimum 30% stretch
  • High-quality double-braid nylon construction
  • Progressive transfer of recovery force
  • Heavy-duty protected rope eyes
  • Designed for demanding vehicle recovery applications
  • Clearly labelled with rope rating
  • Wet/dry carry bag included with most models
  • Five sizes from 13,300kg to 91,300kg MBS
  • Options for 4WD, truck and heavy recovery applications

How a Kinetic Recovery Rope Works

During a kinetic recovery, movement of the recovery vehicle progressively stretches the nylon rope. Energy is stored as the rope extends and then transferred progressively to the stuck vehicle.

Sherpa kinetic recovery ropes provide a minimum 30% stretch, allowing considerably more extension than conventional low-stretch recovery equipment.

This elasticity can help reduce the abrupt jolt associated with a low-stretch connection while providing useful recovery force for vehicles bogged in soft conditions such as sand or mud.

Kinetic recovery still generates very high dynamic forces. Correct equipment selection, rated recovery points and appropriate recovery technique remain essential.

Double-Braid Nylon Construction

Sherpa kinetic recovery ropes are manufactured from double-braid nylon, selected for its combination of strength, elasticity and flexibility.

The double-braid construction incorporates an inner load-bearing structure with a braided outer cover, while the rope eyes incorporate additional protection to help reduce abrasion at the connection points.

Why Use a Kinetic Recovery Rope?

Kinetic ropes are particularly useful where a vehicle is bogged in soft terrain and a progressive build-up of recovery force is beneficial.

  • High stretch compared with low-stretch tow ropes
  • Progressive energy transfer during recovery
  • Helps reduce abrupt shock compared with a low-stretch connection
  • Well suited to suitable sand and mud recoveries
  • Flexible construction for transport and storage
  • Multiple sizes for different vehicle and recovery applications

Selecting a Recovery Rope

Recovery rope selection should consider the vehicles, recovery conditions and every component within the recovery system, rather than relying solely on the vehicle's weight.

Factors to consider include:

  • Weight and GVM of the stuck vehicle
  • Weight and capability of the recovery vehicle
  • Additional vehicle loads
  • Trailers, boats or caravans involved in the recovery
  • Depth and severity of bogging
  • Terrain and available traction
  • Recovery technique
  • Condition and rating of vehicle recovery points
  • Ratings of shackles, soft shackles and connecting equipment

The MBS shown for each rope is its Minimum Breaking Strain. MBS must not be interpreted as a Working Load Limit (WLL) or as the safe recovery capacity of the complete recovery system.

Popular 4WD Recovery Rope

The 22mm (7/8") x 9m Sherpa kinetic recovery rope has a stated Minimum Breaking Strain of 13,300kg and provides a practical option for many appropriately planned recreational 4WD recovery applications.

Larger 32mm, 38mm, 50mm and 64mm ropes are available for applications involving heavier vehicles and more demanding recovery requirements.

Always select recovery equipment according to the complete recovery setup rather than choosing a rope solely because it has the highest available breaking strain.

Heavy Vehicle Recovery

The larger Sherpa ropes provide substantial breaking strengths for appropriately planned heavy recovery applications.

The 38mm (1-1/2") rope has a stated MBS of 33,600kg, while the largest 64mm (2-1/2") rope has a stated MBS of 91,300kg.

Heavy vehicle and industrial kinetic recovery requires appropriately rated recovery points, connecting equipment and suitable recovery procedures. The rope MBS alone does not establish the safe capacity of a recovery operation.

Carry Bag

A wet/dry carry bag is included with the Sherpa kinetic recovery rope range, excluding model SRR51X40.

The bag provides convenient storage and helps keep wet or dirty recovery equipment separated from other equipment after use.

Care & Maintenance

Inspect the recovery rope before and after every use. Do not use a rope showing damage or deterioration that may affect its strength.

Inspect for:

  • Cuts or damaged fibres
  • Excessive abrasion
  • Damage to the braided cover
  • Damaged or worn rope eyes
  • Chemical contamination
  • Heat damage
  • Deformation or other visible deterioration

After exposure to mud, sand or salt, clean the rope with fresh water as appropriate and allow it to dry thoroughly before long-term storage.

Water, contamination, wear and general condition can affect rope performance. Inspect the rope carefully before reuse.

Important Vehicle Recovery Safety

Kinetic vehicle recovery can generate extremely high dynamic forces. Recovery should only be undertaken using equipment and vehicle recovery points suitable for the intended recovery method.

  • Never attach a kinetic recovery rope to a tow ball.
  • Do not use transport tie-down points or other unrated attachment points for kinetic recovery.
  • Inspect the rope and all recovery equipment before use.
  • Ensure recovery points and connecting equipment are suitable for the recovery.
  • Keep bystanders well clear of the recovery area.
  • Never stand over, beside or within the line of a tensioned recovery rope.
  • Use suitable recovery dampening equipment where appropriate.
  • Use clear communication between vehicle operators before beginning the recovery.
  • Do not exceed the limitations of any component in the recovery system.

Minimum Breaking Strain is not a Working Load Limit. The ratings shown for these ropes should not be used as a substitute for assessing the complete recovery system and recovery conditions.
