Description
The Paddock™ Honda Diaphragm Sludge & Slurry Pumps are designed for pumping dirty water, sludge and slurry from sumps, pits, excavations and construction sites. Unlike conventional centrifugal pumps, the diaphragm pumping action is well suited to contaminated water, intermittent flow and applications where solids may be present.
Available in 2" and 3" models, these heavy-duty pump sets combine commercial Honda GX 4-stroke engines with Japanese-manufactured diaphragm pump assemblies. Solids handling capacity is up to 25mm on the 2" model and 31mm on the 3" model.
Paddock™ Honda Diaphragm Sludge & Slurry Pumps
Paddock™ engine-driven diaphragm pumps provide an alternative to conventional centrifugal water pumps for difficult pumping applications involving dirty water, suspended solids, sludge and slurry.
The reciprocating diaphragm design uses one-way suction and discharge valves rather than a high-speed rotating impeller. This makes the pump particularly useful for construction dewatering, slow-filling sumps and contaminated water applications.

Designed for Dirty Water, Sludge & Slurry
Diaphragm pumps operate differently from centrifugal pumps. Instead of using a rapidly rotating impeller, the pump uses a flexible diaphragm that moves back and forth in combination with one-way suction and discharge valves.
As the diaphragm moves through its cycle, fluid is drawn into the pump and then displaced through the outlet.
This operating principle makes the pump suitable for challenging fluids containing suspended material and solids that may cause difficulties for conventional clean-water pumps.
Solids Handling
The SPDP50HX 2" pump can handle solids up to approximately 25mm, while the larger SPDP80HX 3" pump handles solids up to approximately 31mm.
This makes the pumps particularly useful for:

Suitable for Intermittent Dry Running
A key advantage of the diaphragm design is its ability to tolerate periods where little or no liquid reaches the pump.
This is particularly useful when dewatering a slow-filling sump or excavation. As the water level drops below the suction point, the diaphragm can continue cycling until additional water becomes available.
This operating characteristic makes diaphragm pumps well suited to applications where maintaining a continuous flooded suction would be difficult.
Variable Pumping Rate
Pump output varies with engine speed, allowing the operator to reduce engine RPM where maximum flow isn't required.
Running at a lower speed can be useful when managing a slowly filling pit or when a lower transfer rate is preferred.

Both models are powered by genuine Honda GX commercial-series 4-stroke petrol engines.

Choosing a Diaphragm Pump vs Centrifugal Pump
A diaphragm pump is particularly useful where fluid quality and solids handling are more important than achieving very high bulk-transfer flow rates.
For clean water transfer between tanks or dams where maximum flow is the priority, a centrifugal transfer pump may provide a more suitable solution.
For dirty pits, construction sumps, sludge and intermittent dewatering applications, the diaphragm design offers significant practical advantages.

Pump Selection
Actual pumping performance will vary with fluid consistency, solids content, suction lift, discharge elevation, hose size, hose length and engine speed.
For slurry and dirty-water applications, confirm that the material being pumped is compatible with the Buna-N diaphragm and does not contain solids larger than the specified handling capacity.
