Sucker Rod Wrenches

Pipe breakout tools and wrenches where there is a narrowed grip section.
A sucker rod wrench is made to fit the square or hex section provided on sucker rods and polished rods, so torque is applied through the flats rather than by biting into a round surface. A standard pipe wrench relies on serrated jaws that dig into pipe as load increases. That action is useful on threaded pipe, but it can mark, distort or weaken rod surfaces and may slip on hardened material. The correct sucker rod wrench gives more controlled engagement, helps protect the rod and reduces the chance of rounding the wrench flats during make-up or break-out work.
Match the wrench opening to the exact across-flat dimension of the rod connection or wrench square, not simply the nominal rod diameter. Sucker rods, pony rods and polished rods can use different wrench dimensions even when their main body diameters appear similar. A wrench that is too large concentrates load on the corners and can round the flats; one that is too small will not seat fully. Check the rod specification or measure the flats accurately with callipers. Where several rod sizes are serviced, clearly mark each wrench so operators do not force an incorrect size onto the connection.
A close fit spreads torque across the full wrenching surface. Excess clearance allows the wrench to rock before it takes load, concentrating force on two corners instead of the complete flat. Repeated use in this condition rounds the rod, deforms the wrench opening and makes future break-out work more difficult. It can also encourage operators to extend handles or strike the tool, increasing the risk of injury and equipment damage. If the wrench rocks noticeably on an undamaged rod, confirm that the correct size is being used and inspect both the tool and rod flats for wear.
Only where the tool manufacturer specifically permits it. Adding a cheater bar greatly increases torque beyond what the wrench and rod connection may have been designed to withstand. Hammering can shock-load the wrench, chip hardened surfaces and cause sudden release when the joint breaks free. For stubborn connections, clean exposed threads, use the correct opposing wrench arrangement and apply steady, controlled force with suitable lifting or rod-handling equipment. Any wrench that has been bent, cracked, spread at the jaws or damaged by impact should be removed from service rather than straightened and reused.
Before use, inspect the opening for spreading, rounded corners, burrs and uneven wear. Check the handle and transition into the head for cracks, bending or impact damage, particularly if the wrench has previously been struck or overloaded. The tool should sit fully and squarely on the rod flats without rocking. Keep the wrench clean so grit does not accelerate wear or prevent full engagement. In commercial and oilfield service, damaged tools should be tagged out immediately. Replacing a worn wrench is far less costly than damaging a string of rods or losing control of a connection under load.
