Working wet soil is one of the quickest ways to create compaction and large clods that later dry as hard lumps. Instead of producing a fine seedbed, the tines smear the soil and reduce drainage and root development. A simple field test is to squeeze a handful of soil—if it forms a sticky ball rather than crumbling, it is generally too wet to cultivate. Waiting until moisture is right reduces fuel use, produces a better tilth and places less stress on the gearbox and driveline.
L-shaped tines are common for general cultivation and seedbed preparation, giving good soil mixing and penetration. C-shaped or curved tines often run more smoothly in lighter soils and can reduce shock loads when striking small obstacles. The correct tine depends on soil type, working depth and the machine design. Always fit the style recommended by the manufacturer, as changing profiles can affect balance, cultivation quality and power requirements.
As tines wear they become shorter and lose their cutting profile. Replacing only the most damaged ones creates uneven loading across the rotor, leading to vibration, inconsistent cultivation depth and accelerated wear on bearings and seals. Fitting a matched set restores balance and helps the machine work evenly across its full width.
Deeper is not always better. Most seedbed preparation only requires shallow cultivation to create a friable top layer while preserving the stronger soil beneath. Excessive depth wastes fuel, increases wear and may bring poor subsoil to the surface. Set the skids or depth control to suit the crop and soil conditions rather than always running at maximum depth.
Regularly check gearbox oil, tighten tine bolts, inspect seals for leaks and remove wrapped wire, roots and twine from the rotor after use. Grease driveline components where required and store the machine clean and dry. Catching worn tines, leaking seals or loose hardware early prevents far more expensive gearbox and bearing failures.
