A quality titration kit can provide surprisingly accurate field results when the procedure is followed carefully. Accuracy depends on correct sample volume, fresh reagents, good lighting at the endpoint and careful drop counting. They are ideal for routine monitoring, although laboratory analysis may still be preferred where regulatory or highly precise results are required.
The endpoint is identified by a permanent colour change that remains after gentle mixing. Stopping too early or continuing well beyond the first stable colour change will reduce accuracy. Performing the test in natural light or under consistent white lighting makes subtle colour changes easier to identify.
Yes. Titration reagents gradually deteriorate with age, exposure to heat, sunlight and contamination. Expired reagents can produce inaccurate readings even when the test procedure is correct. Store bottles tightly sealed in a cool location and replace them according to the manufacturer's recommendations.
Residues from previous samples, detergents or tap water can alter the chemistry of the sample and affect the result. Rinse all sample containers and test tubes with the sample being tested before filling them to minimise contamination and improve repeatability.
Yes, provided the sample can be handled carefully and protected from dust, rain and direct sunlight. Wind can make accurate drop counting difficult and poor lighting can affect colour interpretation, so a sheltered work area generally produces the most reliable results.
