Consider required trench depth and width, soil type, site access, trench length and the service being installed. A compact trencher suits irrigation, conduit, drainage and communications work where a larger excavator cannot access. Check the machine’s maximum cut, chain options, overall width and transport weight, and allow for hard or rocky ground that may reduce production.
Walk-behind trenchers perform best in soil, clay and moderately compacted ground. Hardpan, large rocks, tree roots, demolition rubble and buried concrete can stop the chain or cause rapid tooth and component wear. Specialised tooth configurations may improve performance in some conditions, but the machine should not be forced through material beyond its design. Test a small section if ground conditions are uncertain.
Obtain current service plans, use approved locating methods and physically verify the position and depth of utilities before trenching. Never assume an area is clear because no markers are visible. Maintain required exclusion distances and use hand excavation or other approved methods near known services. The operator is responsible for site assessment and compliance with local requirements before the digging chain enters the ground.
Release the controls, stop the engine and wait for all movement to cease before approaching the boom or chain. Do not attempt to pull material free while the machine is running. Remove the obstruction using suitable tools and inspect teeth, chain tension, sprockets, boom and drive components for damage. Repeated jamming may indicate unsuitable ground, worn teeth or excessive feed speed.
Inspect chain teeth, cutters, chain tension, sprockets, boom, bearings, belts, controls and guards before use. Replace missing or heavily worn teeth promptly and adjust chain tension to specification; overtightening increases wear while a loose chain may derail. Clean soil from the digging assembly, grease service points and maintain engine oil, filters and drive components according to the schedule.
