Brass Foot Valve & Suction Strainer – BSP
Description
The Brass Foot Valve & Suction Strainer combines a non-return foot valve with a coarse inlet strainer for pump suction applications. Installed at the end of a suction hose or pipe, it helps maintain pump prime while reducing the risk of larger debris entering the pump.
Suitable for compatible water, oil and diesel applications, the brass construction also provides useful weight at the end of the suction line when drawing from dams, tanks, pits, sumps and similar sources.
Brass Foot Valve & Suction Strainer
This combination foot valve and strainer provides a simple way to improve suction-side pump installations where maintaining prime and preventing larger debris from entering the pump are important.
The integrated non-return valve helps retain liquid within the suction line when the pump stops, while the approximately 3mm strainer openings help prevent larger objects such as sticks, leaves and stones from entering the suction hose.

Helps Maintain Pump Prime
When a pump is switched off, liquid in an unprotected suction line can drain back towards the source. This can leave the suction hose containing air and require the pump to be primed again before restarting.
The integrated foot valve acts as a non-return valve, helping retain liquid within the suction line between pump cycles. This can make restarting and priming easier when the valve and suction system are correctly installed and sealed.
Coarse Suction Strainer
The integrated strainer has approximately 3mm openings and is designed to stop larger debris from entering the suction line.
This is particularly useful when pumping from dams, pits, sumps and other sources where sticks, leaves, stones and similar debris may be present.
The strainer is intended for coarse pump protection and should not be considered a fine filtration system.
Weighted Brass Construction
The weight of the brass valve can help keep the end of a flexible suction hose below the liquid surface, reducing the tendency for some suction hoses to float and draw air.
The strainer should still be positioned clear of heavy sediment, mud and the bottom of the water source wherever practical.
Typical Applications
- Dam and tank water transfer
- Irrigation pumps
- Sump and pit pumping
- Rural and farm pumping systems
- Industrial fluid transfer
- Compatible oil and diesel pumping systems

Installation
Install the foot valve and strainer at the inlet end of the pump suction hose or pipe before lowering it into the fluid source.
Ensure all suction-side connections are airtight, as air leaks can affect pump priming and performance. Position the strainer sufficiently below the liquid surface to avoid drawing air, while keeping it clear of the bottom and heavy sediment wherever possible.
Confirm the selected valve size, BSP connection and materials are compatible with the pump, suction line and fluid being transferred.
