Efficient Liquid-to-Liquid Heat Transfer
Brazed plate heat exchangers use a series of thin stainless steel plates to create alternating flow channels between two separate fluid circuits.
Heat passes through the stainless steel plates from the hotter fluid to the cooler fluid without the two fluids mixing. The large surface area provided by the multiple plates allows significant heat transfer from a relatively small and lightweight unit.
The exchangers can be used for both heating and cooling. Performance will depend on factors including:
- Temperature of each fluid entering the heat exchanger
- Flow rate through each circuit
- Fluid properties
- Number of heat exchanger plates
- Flow configuration
Counter-Current or Co-Current Flow
The heat exchangers can be configured for either counter-current or co-current operation.
For many applications, counter-current flow provides the most effective heat transfer. In this arrangement the two fluids travel through the exchanger in opposite directions, helping maintain a greater temperature difference between the two circuits across the length of the exchanger.
Refer to the flow diagrams below when planning your installation.
1/2" BSP Female Connections
All models feature 1/2" BSP female threaded inlet and outlet ports, making it straightforward to adapt the heat exchanger to common pipework and hose installations.
Scintex can also supply a range of brass and stainless steel fittings, hose tails and hose to assist with installation.
For automotive applications, note that 5/8" heater hose is commonly used, so suitable 1/2" BSP adapters or hose tails may be required.
Compact & Easy to Mount
The compact brazed plate design allows the exchanger to be installed where space is limited.
Two M8 threaded mounting points are incorporated into the top plate. These can be used with suitable brackets to secure the exchanger within the installation.

Common Heat Exchanger Applications
The Scintex brazed plate heat exchangers are suitable for a wide variety of heating and cooling applications including:
- Camping showers and portable hot water systems
- Boat and marine engine cooling
- Engine cooling systems
- Biodiesel applications
- Straight Vegetable Oil (SVO) and Waste Vegetable Oil (WVO) conversions
- Beer and beverage chilling
- Wood-fired heating systems
- Radiant floor heating
- Refrigeration systems
- Air conditioning systems
- Solar water heating
- Industrial process heating and cooling
- Heating compatible oils, waxes, honey, beeswax, fats and similar products
Camping Shower & Hot Water Systems
A brazed plate heat exchanger can be used to transfer heat from an engine cooling circuit into a separate clean-water circuit, providing hot water for camping and remote-area applications.
For typical camping shower applications, the 30 plate model is recommended. Where greater heat transfer is desired, such as producing hotter water for washing dishes, the 60 plate model is better suited.
Engine & Outboard Cooling
These heat exchangers can also be used in suitable engine and marine cooling systems where heat needs to be transferred between two separate fluid circuits.
For boat outboard and other engine cooling applications, Scintex recommends the larger 60 plate heat exchanger.
SVO, WVO & Biodiesel Applications
The compact design makes these heat exchangers popular for Straight Vegetable Oil (SVO), Waste Vegetable Oil (WVO) and biodiesel applications.
Engine coolant can be circulated through one side of the exchanger while the fuel or vegetable oil passes through the other, transferring heat into the fuel before it reaches the engine.
For onboard vehicle heating of vegetable oils or biodiesel, the 10 plate model is generally sufficient.
Which Size Heat Exchanger Do I Need?
| Typical Application | Recommended Model |
|---|---|
| Onboard SVO / WVO / Biodiesel Heating | 10 Plate |
| Camping Shower | 30 Plate |
| Higher Temperature Camping Hot Water / Washing | 60 Plate |
| Boat / Outboard Engine Cooling | 60 Plate |
| Other Engine Cooling Applications | 60 Plate |
Note: The recommendations above are a general guide. Actual heat exchanger sizing depends on fluid temperatures, flow rates, required outlet temperature, heat load and other installation-specific factors.
Scintex Flow Testing
Scintex has performed basic flow testing through these heat exchangers to provide an indication of their hydraulic performance.
- When tested using a Bosch 1200 L/hr 12V pump, Scintex recorded approximately 26 L/min through the exchanger.
- When tested using a 12V Quiet Quad 17 L/min pump, Scintex recorded approximately 17 L/min through the exchanger.
These results indicate relatively low flow restriction in the tested configurations. Actual flow and pressure drop will vary depending on the pump, pipework, fittings, fluid and installation.

Important Installation Information
Fluid compatibility: Confirm that all fluids used are chemically compatible with the 316L stainless steel and copper-brazed construction before installation.
Pressure and temperature: Do not exceed the maximum operating pressure of 1,000 kPa / 145 PSI or maximum temperature of 225°C.
System design: Heat exchanger performance depends heavily on flow rates and inlet temperatures on both sides of the exchanger. For critical heating, cooling or industrial applications, the exchanger should be sized according to the required thermal load.
Installation: Use suitable fittings, sealing methods and mounting hardware for the operating pressure, temperature and fluids in your system.
