Description

The Sherpa Grunter Electric Boat Trailer Winch is purpose-built for retrieving heavy boats and vehicles onto trailers. Unlike a general-purpose recovery winch, the Grunter combines fast line speeds, strong pulling performance and an electric motor brake in a compact, heavy-duty package designed specifically for trailer retrieval.

Available in 12V and 24V, the Grunter features a powerful 6.6HP series-wound motor, genuine Albright heavy-duty solenoid, IP68-rated construction and corrosion-resistant 316 stainless steel components. A lower-geared HP model is also available for particularly large boats and demanding trailer setups.

IMPORTANT POWER REQUIREMENT

The vehicle engine must be running during winch operation so the alternator is charging the electrical system. The Grunter draws very high current under load and should not be operated from an isolated battery without suitable charging support. Correct electrical installation is essential for reliable winch performance.

Purpose-Built for Boat Trailer Retrieval

The Sherpa Grunter has been designed specifically for pulling boats and suitable vehicles onto trailers. Rather than simply adapting a conventional 4WD recovery winch, the motor, gearing, braking system and electrical components have been selected around the requirements of trailer retrieval.

This provides a useful combination of pulling performance and retrieval speed, particularly for larger boats where conventional manual or lower-powered trailer winches can be slow.

Standard & HP Models

Standard Grunter: Recommended for boats weighing up to approximately 5,500kg, subject to trailer design, ramp angle, roller arrangement and overall resistance. This model provides a strong balance between line speed and pulling performance.

Grunter HP: Designed for more demanding trailer applications and boats approximately 4,500–9,000kg. The HP model uses lower gearing to increase available pulling force, making it particularly useful where trailer resistance is higher.

The HP model operates at approximately half the line speed of the Standard Grunter due to its lower gearing.

6.6HP Series-Wound Motor

A heavy-duty 6.6HP series-wound motor provides the power required for demanding trailer retrieval. Series-wound motors are well suited to high-load winching applications where strong torque is required.

The winch is supplied with a 7m positive power cable intended to run from the vehicle's electrical system toward the rear tow-bar area.

Electric Motor Brake

The Grunter uses an electric brake located at the motor. The brake releases during powered winching and engages when the control is released, helping provide controlled load holding during normal operation.

The braking system is designed specifically for powered trailer retrieval and should always be operated in accordance with the supplied instructions.

3-Stage Planetary Gearbox

A heavy-duty 3-stage planetary gearbox provides power-in, power-out and free-spool operation. The gearing is configured to balance line speed, pulling performance and electrical current draw for trailer winching.

Corrosion-Resistant Construction

Marine trailer equipment is regularly exposed to water and corrosive environments, so the Grunter incorporates 316 stainless steel fittings, cross members and drum. The aluminium winch body provides strength while helping reduce overall weight.

The winch is also IP68 rated for protection against dust and water ingress.

Genuine Albright Heavy-Duty Solenoid

The Grunter control system incorporates a genuine Albright heavy-duty solenoid designed for high-current winching applications.

The contactor has a stated rating of up to 800A, providing the switching capacity required for the high electrical loads generated during heavy boat retrieval.

Genuine Albright Winch Solenoid

Important: Recommended boat weight and maximum vertical lift capacity are different specifications. Boat retrieval performance depends on trailer angle, rollers or skids, hull position, friction and other installation factors. The vertical lift figure should not be interpreted as the recommended boat weight for trailer retrieval.

Performance Note: The above performance figures apply to the 12V Standard Grunter. HP model and 24V performance will differ.

Electrical Installation

The high current draw shown in the performance table highlights the importance of correct cable sizing, sound electrical connections and adequate charging capacity.

The supplied 7m positive power cable is intended for installations of a similar electrical run length to a Toyota LandCruiser 200 Series. Larger vehicles or installations with longer cable routes may require longer or differently sized cabling.

The vehicle engine must be running while operating the winch so the alternator is charging the electrical system.

Important Operating Information

The Grunter is an intermittent-duty winch. Allow appropriate cooling periods during demanding or extended retrieval operations and never exceed the rated capacities or electrical limitations of the winch.

Ensure the trailer, winch post, mounting structure, fasteners, electrical system, strap or rope and associated hardware are suitable for the loads involved.

Keep people clear of the winch line and load path during operation and follow the supplied Sherpa installation and operating instructions.

Great winch, very powerful and reliable

When I got a new boat trailer, I wanted a decent winch and Peter from Bosun Marine in Dunsborough, Western Australia said "Forget all the cheap Chinese winches. They just don't last, and the last thing you want is your winch not working on the boat ramp. The boat winches from Sherpa are the best, and that's what I recommend."
"OK," I said.
Such a good decision. It's probably much more powerful than I actually need, but I know it is going to work. And it does.

My only feedback is that if the wired cable was about 3 metres longer, I would be able to hold the control unit in one hand and hold the bow of my boat in the other to get the boat lined up to go on the trailer. As it is, the cable is just not quite long enough, so I have to rest the control unit on my trailer mudguard while i grab the bow of the boat. It's not ideal, but it works ok in calm water. Would not be good in rough seas when waves are splashing the top of the trailer mudguard.

I also bought the wireless remote and that works well, so I can hold the boat and control the winch. I have had a couple of issues with the remote not working. The first one wasn't waterproof as the rubber seal had been twisted when it was fitted and salt moisture got inside the remote control and rusted it. The guys at Sherpa support were fantastic and quickly sent me a replacement unit which was very good customer service.

Solid build, powerful winch

Solid build, and great detail to all accompanying parts. Still to install it and test it but it looks great out of the box.

Epic Winch

This winch is fair dinkum tops! I'm in the Macuarie five times a week so I needed me a sturdy winch as the powerfully cheap power winch just kept failing not working and I literally have been manually cranking it for the last couple of months until I could save up for this gem. Worth every penny. Service, Staff, Shipping times, All Five Stars Highly recommend!
