Description
The Sherpa 4x4 Tow Truck 20,000lb Winch is a heavy-duty electric winch designed specifically for loading and controlled lowering of vehicles, machinery, containers and equipment on tilt trays, flat-bed trucks and custom trailers.
Unlike a conventional 4WD recovery winch, this model uses a motor-mounted fail-safe brake designed to provide improved control when winching loads both in and out. With a 20,000lb (9,090kg) rated line pull, oversized drum, genuine Albright solenoid and your choice of 12V or 24V operation, it is built for demanding transport and recovery applications.

Sherpa 4x4 Tow Truck 20,000lb Electric Winch
Built for Tilt Trays, Trucks & Equipment Trailers
The Sherpa Tow Truck Winch has been developed for applications where loads need to be winched onto and lowered from trailers, tilt trays and flat-bed trucks.
Typical applications include loading:
- Vehicles
- Machinery
- Plant and equipment
- Containers
- Trailers
- Farm equipment
- Recovery vehicles
The large frame and oversized drum provide generous rope or cable capacity and help make spooling easier during repeated loading operations.
Motor-Mounted Fail-Safe Brake
A key feature of this winch is its hoist-style motor brake. Mechanical springs apply braking force automatically when electrical power is removed, while the brake is electrically released when the winch is operated.
Positioning the brake on the motor side of the drive system allows it to provide strong holding force while helping make the winch better suited to controlled lowering applications than conventional vehicle-recovery winch brake designs.
Important: Although this winch uses a hoist-style brake, it is not certified for overhead lifting or personnel lifting. It uses a single braking system and does not provide the redundancy required by many certified hoisting standards.
20,000lb Rated Line Pull
The Tow Truck Winch provides a rated line pull of 20,000lb (9,090kg), making it suitable for demanding vehicle and machinery loading applications when correctly selected and installed.
As with all winches, available pulling force varies according to drum layer, rope angle, system setup and operating conditions.
12V or 24V Options
The winch is available in both 12V and 24V configurations, allowing it to be matched to a wide range of trucks, trailers and vehicle electrical systems.
Both versions use a 6.6hp motor and genuine Albright switching equipment.
Synthetic Rope or Steel Cable
The winch can be supplied with either synthetic rope or steel cable:
- Synthetic Rope: 28m x 10mm, rated to 23,760lb minimum breaking strength
- Steel Cable: 28m x 10mm, rated to 19,400lb minimum breaking strength
Synthetic rope models are supplied with a polished aluminium hawse, while steel cable models include a 4-way roller fairlead.
Depending on the trailer or truck installation, users may choose to shorten the supplied rope or cable to reduce unnecessary drum layers and improve usable winch performance.
Large Drum Design
The oversized drum helps accommodate the supplied 28m rope or cable while reducing the risk of over-spooling during loading operations.
This is particularly useful on tilt trays and transport applications where repeated winching may otherwise create uneven layering on smaller drums.
Genuine Albright Solenoid
The Sherpa Tow Truck Winch is supplied with a genuine Albright International heavy-duty solenoid in the control system.
Albright contactors are designed for high-current DC switching and are well suited to demanding winch applications.
IP66 Rated
The winch carries an IP66 rating, making it suitable for outdoor truck and trailer installations exposed to rain, dust and normal weather conditions.
The winch should not be submerged. Water ingress into the electric motor brake can adversely affect braking performance.
