Sherpa 4x4 Steel Winch Cable – 6mm to 12mm
Description
Sherpa 4x4 Steel Winch Cables provide a durable replacement cable option for compatible electric winches. Available in 6mm, 8mm, 10mm and 12mm diameters with lengths from 28m to 45m, the range covers vehicle recovery and other compatible winching applications.
Each cable is supplied ready for winch installation with a drum-end connection and a spliced eye for attaching a compatible winch hook.
Sherpa 4x4 Replacement Steel Winch Cable
Steel cable remains a popular choice for electric winches where durability and abrasion resistance are important. Sherpa 4x4 offers a range of replacement steel winch cables in different diameters, lengths and minimum breaking strains to suit compatible winch setups.
If an existing winch cable has become kinked, crushed, frayed or otherwise damaged, it should be removed from service and replaced. Damage to wire rope can significantly reduce its strength and make continued use unsafe.

Steel Cable for Winching & Vehicle Recovery
Steel winch cable provides excellent abrasion resistance and remains a practical choice for many vehicle recovery and winching applications.
Unlike synthetic rope, steel cable is less susceptible to abrasion from rough surfaces, but it requires appropriate handling and regular inspection. Kinks, flattened sections, corrosion and broken wire strands can compromise the cable and should not be ignored.
Choose the Correct Cable
The Sherpa range includes five steel cable options:
- SWCG30M6MM: 30m × 6mm – 7,200lb minimum breaking strain
- SWCG30M8MM: 30m × 8mm – 12,000lb minimum breaking strain
- SWC28M: 28m × 10mm – 19,400lb minimum breaking strain
- SWC45M: 45m × 10mm – 19,400lb minimum breaking strain
- SWC30M: 30m × 12mm – 30,000lb minimum breaking strain
When replacing an existing winch cable, confirm the required cable diameter, length, drum capacity, attachment method and winch compatibility before ordering.

Understanding Minimum Breaking Strain
The figures shown above are the supplied minimum breaking strain (MBS) for each cable. Minimum breaking strain is not the same as a working load limit and should not be treated as the permissible recovery load.
The complete winching system must be appropriately selected for the application, including the winch, cable, hook, shackles, recovery points and any other components used in the load path.
Steel Winch Cable Inspection
Inspect steel cable before use and regularly throughout its service life. Remove the cable from service if there are signs of damage that could compromise its strength or safe operation.
Pay particular attention to:
- Broken or protruding wire strands
- Kinks or sharp bends
- Flattened or crushed sections
- Excessive corrosion
- Damage around the hook eye or termination
- Damage or deterioration at the drum connection
Steel cable should be correctly wound onto the winch drum and maintained under appropriate tension to help prevent loose or crossed wraps.
Winch Recovery Safety
Sherpa 4x4 recommends using a suitable winch dampener during vehicle recovery.
Avoid shock loading the winch or cable. Keep people clear of the cable and recovery path while the system is under load, and never use damaged or frayed cable.
Always ensure the winch, cable and all recovery equipment are appropriately rated and suitable for the intended application.
