Description
The Paddock™ Tractor PTO Backhoe is a versatile three-point linkage implement designed for excavation, trenching, landscaping and general property maintenance. Suited to compatible Category I and II tractors in the 25–60HP range, the backhoe incorporates its own PTO-driven hydraulic system, onboard oil reservoir, hydraulic stabilisers and a hydraulic thumb as standard.
Paddock™ Tractor PTO Backhoe
The Paddock™ SPBACK86 converts a compatible tractor into a versatile backhoe for digging trenches, landscaping, property maintenance and general excavation work.
The backhoe connects to the tractor's Category I or II three-point linkage and uses a 540 RPM PTO connection to power its onboard hydraulic system. This means the backhoe does not rely on the tractor's rear hydraulic remotes for normal digging operation.
A dedicated operator's station, hydraulic stabiliser legs, 180° swing arc and included hydraulic thumb provide a practical standalone backhoe attachment for tractors in the appropriate size and capacity range.

Self-Contained PTO Hydraulic System
The SPBACK86 incorporates its own hydraulic gear pump and onboard hydraulic oil reservoir. Power is supplied from the tractor through a standard 540 RPM PTO connection, allowing the backhoe's digging functions to operate from its dedicated hydraulic system.
This self-contained arrangement simplifies installation on compatible tractors and provides a hydraulic system designed specifically for operation of the backhoe.
Hydraulic Thumb Included
A hydraulic thumb is fitted as standard, increasing the versatility of the backhoe beyond conventional digging applications.
Working in conjunction with the bucket, the thumb can assist with gripping and handling suitable objects such as logs, branches, rocks and pipe. The thumb is hydraulically operated independently of the bucket pivot, giving the operator greater control when positioning and handling material.
Always keep loads within the safe operating capability and stability limits of the backhoe and tractor combination.
SAE & ISO Control Patterns
The hydraulic controls can be configured between SAE and ISO operating patterns using the incorporated selector arrangement. This allows operators familiar with different excavator control layouts to select their preferred configuration.
Always confirm the selected control pattern and function of every lever before beginning work.
9ft Digging Depth
The SPBACK86 provides a maximum digging depth of approximately 2743mm (9ft) measured to the bottom of the digging profile, with a flat-bottom digging depth of approximately 2438mm (8ft 6").
A reach of approximately 3200mm from the centreline of the swing pivot provides useful working coverage for trenching and excavation applications.
Hydraulic Stabilisers
Hydraulic stabiliser legs are incorporated into the backhoe to provide a stable operating platform during excavation. With the stabilisers lowered, the stated spread is approximately 2260mm.
Correct stabiliser use is essential. The backhoe should only be operated on suitable, stable ground with the tractor and implement correctly positioned in accordance with the operating instructions.
Typical Applications
- Trenching and drainage
- Laying cable and pipe
- General excavation
- Landscaping
- Property and acreage maintenance
- Fence and stockyard construction
- Cleaning suitable dams and waterholes
- Handling logs, rocks and other suitable objects using the hydraulic thumb

Tractor Compatibility
The SPBACK86 is designed for compatible Category I and II tractors and is best suited to tractors in the 25–60HP range. Three-point linkage category and engine horsepower alone do not guarantee compatibility.
Before ordering, confirm that the tractor has the appropriate three-point linkage geometry, 540 RPM PTO and sufficient rear implement carrying capacity for the approximately 520kg backhoe. Tractor weight, stability, ballast requirements, PTO geometry and manufacturer limitations should also be considered.
Important Safety Information
A tractor-mounted backhoe can apply significant forces to the tractor and three-point linkage during digging. Correct installation, stabiliser positioning and tractor setup are essential before operation.
Operate from the backhoe's designated operator position and use the supplied seat belt and safety equipment as intended. Keep all bystanders clear of the working and swing area.
Before excavating, identify underground utilities and services including electricity, gas, water, communications, drainage and irrigation infrastructure.
Never use the backhoe or hydraulic thumb to lift people. When handling objects with the hydraulic thumb, keep loads low and within the stability and operating capability of the tractor/backhoe combination.
