Sherpa 4x4 12V Winch Motor – 8.9HP, Suits Selected WARN Winches
Description
High-performance Sherpa 4x4 12V replacement winch motor designed to suit selected WARN winches, including compatible 8274, XD9000 and 9.5XP models.
Featuring a stated 8.9HP motor rating, heavy-duty copper armature windings, four large brushes and a 20-spline output shaft, this motor is designed for demanding winch applications where strong low-speed torque and high motor performance are required.
Sherpa 4x4 8.9HP Winch Motor – Suits Selected WARN Winches
This aftermarket 12V winch motor provides a high-output replacement or upgrade option for selected WARN winches using the compatible 20-spline motor interface.
It is particularly suited to compatible WARN 8274 high-mount installations, including custom single- and dual-motor configurations where the installation has been designed appropriately.
Winch Motor Features
- Stated 8.9HP motor rating
- 12V DC operation
- Up to approximately 6000RPM
- Stated 10Nm load rating
- Heavy-duty copper armature windings
- Roller bearing supported armature
- Computer-balanced and machined armature
- Four large motor brushes
- Large motor frame designed to assist heat dissipation
- 20-spline output shaft
- Suitable for selected WARN-style winch applications
- 12 month warranty
Selected WARN Winch Compatibility
The motor is supplied as an aftermarket replacement / upgrade option for selected compatible WARN winches, including:
- WARN 8274
- WARN XD9000
- WARN 9.5XP
Important: Fitment depends on the winch having the compatible motor mounting arrangement and 20-spline interface.
This motor does not suit older keyway-style WARN winch configurations. Check the existing motor, shaft interface, mounting arrangement and available installation space before ordering.
High-Mount Winch Applications
The motor is particularly suited to compatible WARN 8274 high-mount winches and may be used in appropriately engineered single- or dual-motor configurations.
Custom and dual-motor installations require suitable mounting, gearing, electrical switching, cabling and power supply components capable of handling the resulting loads and current demand.
Motor Performance
The motor is stated to operate at up to approximately 6000RPM and is designed to provide strong torque at lower motor speeds.
The supplied performance information states a 10Nm load rating. Testing at an 8Nm load recorded approximately 310A current draw over a 120-second test period.
These figures describe the supplied test conditions and should not be interpreted as guaranteed performance across every winch installation. Actual motor speed, current draw, temperature and winch performance will depend on load, gearing, battery voltage, cabling, connections and other installation factors.
Heavy-Duty Motor Construction
The motor incorporates heavy-duty copper armature windings and four large brushes within a substantial motor frame.
Roller bearings support the armature, while the armature is balanced and machined to promote smooth rotation at operating speed.
Electrical System Requirements
High-output winch motors can draw very high current under load. For best performance, the vehicle should have an appropriately sized and maintained electrical system, including:
- Suitable 12V battery capacity
- Correctly sized winch cabling
- High-quality terminals and electrical connections
- Suitable winch contactor / switching equipment
- An appropriate vehicle charging system
Voltage drop through undersized cables, poor terminals or inadequate electrical components can reduce winch performance and generate excessive heat.

Important Winch Motor Operation
Do not deliberately stall the motor. A stalled winch motor can draw extremely high current and rapidly generate heat, potentially damaging the motor and other electrical components.
Winch load, gearing and operating technique should keep the motor within appropriate operating conditions. Allow components to cool when required during demanding or extended winching.
Before installation, confirm physical fitment, spline compatibility and electrical system suitability for the intended winch configuration.
