Why Choose a Sherpa 4x4 Winch?
Tried & Tested
Sherpa winches have been developed through extensive real-world use in demanding off-road and recovery environments. The design has been refined over many years to produce a reliable winch capable of operating in mud, water and harsh Australian conditions.
The Brumby carries an IP68 ingress protection rating, providing a high level of protection against dust and water ingress when correctly installed and maintained.
Heavy Duty Construction
The Brumby uses 316 stainless steel fittings and cross members to improve corrosion resistance and durability in harsh operating environments.
The robust frame and driveline are designed around demanding recovery loads rather than light-duty occasional use.
Gearbox-Mounted Braking System
The Sherpa braking system is located within the gearbox rather than inside the winch drum.
This design is particularly advantageous when using synthetic rope because it helps minimise heat transfer into the drum during braking. Excessive drum heat can damage synthetic recovery rope over time.
The gearbox-mounted brake also remains lubricated within the driveline and provides automatic load holding during normal recovery operation.
CNC-Cut Planetary Gearbox
The Brumby uses a three-stage planetary gearbox with a 105:1 reduction ratio.
Sherpa specifies quality machined gearbox components designed to handle the high torque loads generated during recovery.
Powerful 8.9hp Series-Wound Motor
The heavy duty 8.9hp series-wound motor provides the power required for both fast line speed and strong recovery performance.
High copper content in the motor windings and the heavy duty electrical system are designed to withstand the demanding current loads associated with vehicle recovery.
Genuine Albright Solenoid
All Sherpa 4x4 winches are supplied with genuine Albright contactors.
The Brumby incorporates a custom version of the Albright DC88P contactor designed specifically for Sherpa 4x4 winch control boxes.
Rated for currents up to approximately 800A, the contactor provides substantial capacity beyond the normal operating current of the winch.

Fast Line Speed
The Brumby is specifically designed as a high-speed recovery winch.
The 12V model achieves approximately 15.2m/min with no load, while the 24V model reaches approximately 15.6m/min.
Even at the full 10,000lb rated pull, the winch continues to achieve useful line speeds of approximately 3.2m/min on 12V and 4.0m/min on 24V.
Synthetic Rope or Steel Cable
The Brumby is available with either synthetic recovery rope or steel cable.
Synthetic Rope Option
The synthetic rope model includes approximately 28m of 9.5mm synthetic rope with an 18,000lb minimum breaking strain rating.
Synthetic rope is lightweight and easy to handle and is supplied with a polished aluminium hawse fairlead.
Steel Cable Option
The steel cable version includes approximately 28m of 10mm steel cable and is supplied with a roller fairlead.
Steel cable provides a traditional, highly abrasion-resistant recovery line and is often preferred in industrial or harsh working environments.
What's Included
Sherpa winches are supplied as a complete kit for a standard installation.

Optional & Recommended Accessories
A range of optional accessories is available for Sherpa winches, including wireless remotes, winch dampeners, isolation switches and recovery equipment.
See the Sherpa 4WD Accessories range for further details.
A suitable winch dampener is recommended during recovery operations and is particularly important when using steel cable.
A battery isolation switch is also strongly recommended. Isolation helps prevent unauthorised operation of the winch and provides additional protection should the main positive cable become damaged or short to earth.
