Sherpa 4x4 The Steed 17,000lb Winch
Heavy-Duty 17,000lb Recovery Winch
The Steed is one of Sherpa 4x4's heavy-duty electric recovery winches, combining a 17,000lb rated line pull with an 8.9hp motor and robust drivetrain. It is designed for larger 4WDs, trucks and vehicles where additional winching capacity is required.
The latest model features 316 stainless steel fittings and cross members, a genuine Albright heavy-duty solenoid, hoist-style wired hand remote and Sherpa's distinctive yellow powder-coated finish.
Important: Winch rope or cable must be correctly wound onto the drum under load before use. Refer to the Winch Cable section of the supplied manual for the correct first-use procedure.
Why Choose The Steed?
Heavy-Duty Construction
The Steed is designed for demanding off-road environments. The latest model incorporates 316 stainless steel fittings and cross members, along with seals and O-rings to help protect the winch from dust, mud and water ingress.
IP68 Rated
The Steed carries an IP68 ingress rating, providing a high level of protection against dust and water ingress when correctly installed and maintained.
Gearbox-Mounted Automatic Brake
The Steed uses an automatic brake integrated into the gearbox rather than a brake positioned inside the winch drum. This helps reduce heat transfer into the drum, an important consideration when using synthetic winch rope.
Heavy-Duty 3-Stage Planetary Gearbox
A 3-stage planetary gearbox with a 246:1 reduction ratio transfers motor power into controlled pulling performance. Sherpa specifies CNC-cut steel gears for durability under demanding winching loads.
8.9hp Series-Wound Motor
The Steed uses an 8.9hp series-wound motor designed to provide the torque required for heavy vehicle recovery. Both 12V and 24V configurations are available to suit different vehicle electrical systems.
Genuine Albright Solenoid
Every Steed is supplied with a genuine Albright International heavy-duty contactor inside the control box. The custom Albright unit is rated to handle up to 800A for switching the high electrical loads associated with winch operation.
Synthetic Rope or Steel Cable
Choose the configuration that best suits your recovery setup. Synthetic rope models are supplied with a polished aluminium hawse fairlead, while steel cable models include a 4-roller fairlead.
5 Year Warranty & Spare Parts Support
The Steed is backed by a 5 year warranty, with replacement parts and accessories available through Sherpa 4x4.
What's Included?
The Sherpa Steed is supplied as a comprehensive winch kit with the main components required for a standard installation.

Recommended Winch Accessories
Depending on your installation and recovery setup, additional accessories such as a winch dampener, battery isolation switch and wireless remote may be useful.
A winch dampener is recommended during recovery operations. A suitable battery isolation switch can also be used to isolate power to the winch when it is not in use.

Important Recovery & Installation Information
The 17,000lb (7,700kg) rated line pull is the winch's rated pulling capacity and should not be interpreted as a working load limit for the complete recovery system. All recovery points, shackles, ropes, straps and other equipment must be appropriately selected and rated for the recovery being performed.
The synthetic rope's stated 23,760lb figure is a minimum breaking strength (MBS), not a working load limit.
Winch performance varies with drum layer, battery condition, electrical supply, installation and operating conditions. Observe the winch's intermittent duty cycle and allow adequate cooling between prolonged or high-load pulls.
Always use appropriate recovery techniques, keep people clear of the winch line and recovery path, and follow the Sherpa installation and operating instructions.
