Torque Wrenches

Calibration frequency depends on usage, but professional workshops commonly verify torque wrenches annually or after a specified number of cycles. Any wrench that has been dropped, overloaded or suspected of giving incorrect readings should be checked immediately. Regular calibration ensures critical fasteners are tightened within specification.
Yes. Most manufacturers recommend backing adjustable click-type torque wrenches back to their minimum scale setting—not below it—after use. This reduces long-term spring compression and helps maintain calibration accuracy. Beam-type torque wrenches do not require this storage procedure.
Torque wrenches are designed primarily for accurate tightening. Using them as breaker bars to loosen stubborn fasteners can overload the mechanism and affect calibration. Use a suitable ratchet or breaker bar first, then use the torque wrench only for final tightening.
Straight extensions usually have little effect on applied torque. However, crow's-foot adaptors or extensions that change the effective lever length can alter the actual torque applied unless compensated for. Follow the wrench manufacturer's recommendations whenever using special attachments.
Possible causes include an incorrectly set torque value, damaged threads, lack of lubrication where specified, bottoming out of the fastener or an internal calibration issue. Never continue pulling after the click, as this can overtighten the fastener.
