Choose a hand winch by the load being pulled, the direction of pull, required cable or strap capacity and mounting arrangement. Confirm whether the winch is rated for pulling only or also for lifting, because most trailer-style hand winches are not approved for suspending loads. Allow a suitable safety margin and consider incline, rolling resistance and friction rather than using load weight alone.
A brake winch uses an automatic braking mechanism to help hold the load when the handle is released, while a basic ratchet winch relies on a pawl and gear system. Brake winches are often preferred where controlled load positioning is required, but suitability still depends on the model’s rating. Neither type should be used for lifting people or unsupported overhead loads.
Wire rope offers abrasion resistance and heat tolerance but can kink, corrode and develop sharp broken strands. Synthetic rope is lighter and easier to handle but requires protection from abrasion and heat. Webbing straps spool neatly and suit boat trailers and light-duty pulling. Use only the line type, diameter and length approved for the winch drum.
Always retain the minimum number of wraps specified by the manufacturer so the line attachment is not carrying the full load. Winch capacity is highest on the first drum layer and decreases as additional layers build up. Do not overfill the drum, and guide the line evenly to prevent crushing, bunching or side loading.
Inspect the frame, mounting bolts, gears, pawl, brake, handle, hook and cable or strap before use. Lubricate gears and pivots as specified, keep brake surfaces free from contamination and replace frayed, kinked or corroded line promptly. Never use a winch with cracked components, missing guards or a ratchet that does not engage positively.
